Why does the name Richard:

Shorten to...

Well, it was medieval England.

Like the 1100s.

And everyone's got super long, fancy names.

To make things worse for poor Rick...

People back then loved rhyming nicknames.

Like William to Will... then Bill!

Robert becomes Rob... then Bob!

And unfortunately Richard becomes Rick...

...and...

Yes, a hilarious rhyme:

But this doesn't even mean what we think yet! (๐Ÿ†)

It's a totally normal, everyday guy name.

Until 200 years later...

There were so many Dicks in the world.

A lot of Derd with word dick in head

People would say "oh ya, every tom, dick, and harry..."

It starts to just mean 'guy.'

A lot of Derd with word guy in forehead

And once Dick meant 'guy'..

Well, it was only a matter of time before we attached it to the male appendage.
