The Dark History of Coca-Cola...

3 min read

Morning Coke Addicts!

Good catch, Derd.

Ya that other kind..

Coca-Cola.

That innocent fizzy drink you've been chugging your whole life?

Oh yeah... it has a super dark history.

Like, really dark.

Coca-Cola was invented by a morphine-addicted Confederate soldier.

So…

Naturally, there was some cocaine in it too.

Let’s go back.

Atlanta, Georgia.

Civil-ish War, I guess.

We've got this dude:

John Pemberton. A Confederate soldier getting absolutely–

Oops!

Rush this man to the field hospital, stat!

Holy sh*t! Pemberton survives.

The only problem?

Now he's completely addicted to morphine.

So he buys a $5 medical license to become a "doctor."

You know, so he can like acquire more of that good good…

Vin Mariani is a wine mixed with cocaine.

Marketed as a cure for literally everything.

That’s his fix!

So Pemberton thinks he can make this cocaine wine better.

He creates his own version: French Wine Coca.

Wine + cocaine + some random herbs = instant success!

Boom:

How’s about the label on that bad boy:

Crazy.

But then Prohibition hits:

So Pemberton removes the wine, adds carbonated water, and tons of sugar.

Then his bookkeeper, Frank Robinson, is like:

And Coca-Cola was born!

But that's just the beginning of this insane story.

Watch out, the Nazis show up pretty soon..
