The Pigeon That Ended WWI

3 min read

Morning Pigeons!

Now you might just think that’s a normal pigeon.

So how’s about this one:

Also looks fairly normal, right?

Think again..

One. Leg.

Why??

This little dude SAVED a couple hundred US soldiers in World War 1.

The year is 1918

Argonne Forest, France.

And there’s this US army unit pushing WAY too far forward against the Germans

The US soldiers are also cut off from reinforcements

Andddd out of ammo

Oh oh and–

Nice! American artillery is accidentally shelling them lol

Friendly fire.

So what’s their last-ditch effort??

Carrier Pigeons..

They THROW these guys up trying to send messages back to their own team, but–

Ugh.

They’re down to their last pigeon: the beautiful–

They tie a message to his leg that’s like

And Cher takes flight!

He’s shot in the chest..

One eye’s blown out

But he keeps flying - through gunfire and smoke - for TWENTY FIVE miles

He delivers the message

The 200 US soldiers live.

Oh, and he’s taxidermied in the Smithsonian now!

Stay Flying,
