Where Are Ants Taking All Those Leaves?
Morning Leafcutters!!

You know that super stereotypical thing ants are always doing?
Like if I told you to imagine a bunch of ants hanging out, what do you see?

Exactly.
Where are the ants taking all these leaves?!
No, they’re not eating them.
And no, these aren’t normal ants.
These guys are leafcutter ants - Earth’s oldest farmers:

So they’ll walk up to a leaf ten times their size:

Chop it off with its beak:

Carry it home:

Shred it:

Poop on it:

Anddddd plant it:

So how’s your day going otherwise?
Good good? Oh that’s great to hea–

Oh, god!
Ya, their poopy leaves blossom into fungus.
This one, to be exact:

Leucoagaricus gongylophorus
It grows these little nutrient-packed bulbs

Feeding the entire ant city!!
