Why Do Golf Balls Have Bumps?

3 min read

Morning Tiger!

Look at this beauty:

That doesn’t do anything for you?

Come on..

The color, the name, the font, the subtlest ~orange~..

It’s beautiful!

Human ingenuity at its finest.

BUT, why’s it got all those bumps on it??

No other sports ball does..

Let’s figure this out.

Drop Derd Woods on the tee box.

Alright, let it rip!

Uh..

Because we can, let’s just assume Derd actually whacked the ball..

Perfect.

Once airborne, air is SLAMMING into those bumpy dimples:

Which, instead of smooth air flow, stirs up all these turbulent tornadoes around the ball.

That essentially creates a vacuum behind the ball, LAUNCHING it forward:

Less drag!

But because the ball is spinning, those dimples push the air down.

Which lifts our ball UP!

So what do we got so far?

Whoop!
