Why Don’t Woodpeckers Get Concussions?

3 min read

Morning Peckers!

When a woodpecker is really going at it, they SLAM their heads into a tree 20 TIMES per second..

Here’s a real one:

If that were you or me, we’d get a concussion immediately.

So how doesn’t a woodpecker??

Well to get the how, we must first figure out the why.

See, woodpeckers have to peck trees.

Not only is it part of their name, but they’re looking for insects:

And little nests:

Aka food.

When they do find something to eat, they slidddddeeee their tongue in that little hole to grab ‘em!

Now, this means their tongue is 3 times the length of their beak..

So where do they keep it??

HERE!

Wrapped alllll the way around its skull like a seatbelt.

Protecting that tiny, snug little brain and absorbing the shock!

Their tongue is a helmet!
