Why Every Email Has '@'

3 min read

Morning @s!

Okay, that one was a stretch lol.

But real talk.

Look at your email address: {{email}}

Every single email on the PLANET has that dorky little @ symbol in it.

WHY?!

Well, the year was 1971.

The guy was this computer engineer, Ray Tomlinson:

Ray wants to send a message from his computer..

Soooo he invents email!

Sending this:

QWERTYUIOP!

Seems random and stupid, right?

It’s not. Look at the top row of letters on your keyboard.

Banger.

So anyway, Ray’s got a problem:

He looks down at his keyboard..

He needs a symbol that will NEVER appear in someone’s name.

  • Not a period
  • Not a hyphen
  • Not a space (that would break everything)

Wait!

Ya, that little symbol was used by medieval merchants to mean ‘at the rate of’

Like:

But nobody uses it anymore!

So Ray formats his new email language

And it was so clever we never stopped using it!
